Solution 06 / E-Waste & Computer Recycling
Business electronics recycling, with reuse and data screening first.
TALC separates reusable equipment, data-bearing devices, batteries, and other special-handling items before approved end-of-life electronics enter the recycling stream. Pickup, downstream processing, and reporting requirements are confirmed from the actual inventory and location.
Review the screening steps →Initial screening / before recycling
Four checks separate reusable, data-bearing, and special-handling equipment.
EPA lifecycle guidance supports reuse where practical before responsible end-of-life management. The available disposition still depends on the equipment, location, data requirements, and downstream capability.
- 01
Reuse potential
Ask whether equipment should be retained, redeployed, recovered, donated under an approved client program, or reviewed before it is labeled for recycling.
- 02
Data-bearing devices
Separate computers, drives, mobile devices, printers, appliances, and embedded storage that require a client-approved data decision or custody path.
- 03
Special handling
Hold batteries, damaged equipment, unusual components, leased assets, lab devices, client exclusions, unknown ownership, and other material needing a specific decision.
- 04
Recycling
Group the remaining approved electronics around pickup, packaging, quantities, material characteristics, downstream direction, and the closeout support the project expects.
Category review / typical groups, not an acceptance list
Use categories to find the next question.
These groups help structure an initial scope. They do not confirm that every item is accepted, recyclable, reusable, safe to handle, or available to a specific downstream provider.
- 01Computing
- Desktops, laptops, thin clients, workstations, servers, and related components.
Reuse, data, ownership, configuration, batteries, and completeness may change the route.
- 02Network / infrastructure
- Switches, routers, appliances, telecom equipment, rack devices, power equipment, and cabling.
Data, configuration, active-service boundaries, batteries, and removal scope require review.
- 03Displays / peripherals
- Monitors, docks, keyboards, mice, scanners, printers, conferencing devices, and accessories.
Condition, embedded storage, toner, batteries, glass, and local downstream requirements may differ.
- 04Mobile / small devices
- Phones, tablets, handhelds, media, chargers, and compact electronics.
Data, accounts, management locks, batteries, custody, and identifier expectations should be defined.
- 05Specialized electronics
- Lab, test, medical-adjacent, industrial, control, and unusual technical equipment.
Do not treat this as a universal acceptance list; identity, hazards, utilities, data, and downstream capability need specific review.
Pickup → processing → reporting
Keep collection records connected to downstream disposition.
Record what was collected, how it was separated, where it was directed, and which exceptions remain.
- 01
Pickup & segregation
Plan access, loading, packaging, staging, and field separation for reuse, data, special-review, and recycling groups.
- 02
Data exceptions
Hold unknown media, embedded storage, locked devices, damaged drives, and identifier conflicts for review.
- 03
Downstream & record
Connect approved material routes to the pickup scope, unresolved items, and agreed supporting records.
